  1. What should you open a discovery call with?
  2. Why do buyers trust insight more than small talk?

You spent an hour on the buyer’s annual report, her last two quarterly updates and the job posts her team put up this month. Then the call starts, and the first thing you ask about is her weekend.

She has heard that opener from every rep this quarter, and by the time you reach your research she has filed you with them. Your hour of work deserves the first sentence of the call.

What should you open a discovery call with?

One piece of insight about the buyer’s business: a benchmark, a case study from a company like hers, or her own goal said back to her.In a 2025 LinkedIn Sales Navigator and Ipsos study of 887 B2B buyers, insight like this built trust for 46% to 52% of them, against 22% to 32% for personal details.

  1. The benchmark. “Most operations teams your size I talk to lose about a day a week to carrier paperwork. Is that close for you, or are you ahead of it?” Use a number you can show, and ask where she sits against it.
  2. The case study. “A distributor about your size had the same problem with late carrier invoices. Can I take two minutes on what they changed, and you tell me if any of it fits?” It gives before it asks, and she decides whether it applies.
  3. Her goal, back to her. “Last time you said on-time delivery is the number your board watches this year. Is that still the one, or has it moved?” Use it on any call after the first.

Why do buyers trust insight more than small talk?

Buyers judge a rep by what the rep knows about their business. In the same study, 86% of buyers said seller expertise is the top driver of trust, yet only 45% said they trust the sellers they deal with, and the rep who opens with insight steps into that gap first.

Small talk about her weekend or her kids’ hockey still has a place later in the call, once the insight has earned you the time.

The third opener is the strongest of the three, since it proves you listened months ago and catches a goal that has moved before you pitch to the old one. It depends on having her exact words from last time in front of you before you dial.
